Long division calculator

Enter the number to divide and what to divide it by. You'll see the long division written out the way you'd do it on paper, with each step explained.

Private: calculated on your device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How long division works

Long division breaks a big division into small ones, one digit at a time. For 247 ÷ 7:

  1. Divide: 7 doesn't go into 2, so look at 24. 7 goes into 24 three times.
  2. Multiply: 3 × 7 = 21.
  3. Subtract: 24 − 21 = 3.
  4. Bring down the next digit, 7, to make 37. Then repeat: 7 goes into 37 five times, 5 × 7 = 35, and 37 − 35 = 2.

No digits are left, so the answer is 35 remainder 2. As a mixed number that's 35 2/7, and as a decimal 35.285714…, where 285714 repeats forever. A handy way to remember the order is Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down.

Checking the answer

Multiply the answer by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the number you started with: 35 × 7 + 2 = 247.

Dividing decimals

Move the decimal point in both numbers the same number of places until there are none left. 12.5 ÷ 0.25 becomes 1250 ÷ 25, which is 50. Moving both points together doesn't change the answer. To keep going past the decimal point, set the decimal places above the 0: each step brings down a 0.

Questions people ask

How do you do long division with remainders?

Divide one digit at a time from the left: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit. When there are no digits left, whatever is left over is the remainder. 247 ÷ 7 = 35 remainder 2.

How do you turn a remainder into a decimal?

Keep dividing: add a decimal point and bring down zeros. Or divide the remainder by the divisor: 2 ÷ 7 = 0.285714…, so 247 ÷ 7 = 35.285714…

What's the difference between the dividend and the divisor?

The dividend is the number being divided (247), the divisor is the number you divide by (7), and the answer is the quotient (35).

How do I check a long division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. 35 × 7 + 2 = 247, so the answer is right.
