How to use the scientific calculator
- Type naturally.
3(4+5),2pi,sin 30and√2all work. Multiplication can be written as*,×or left out. - Degrees or radians. Use the Deg/Rad switch. If you type
sin(90)in radians, the calculator gently asks whether you meant degrees. - Exact answers. When a result is a fraction, you see it as a fraction too:
1/3 + 1/6gives 0.5 and 1/2. - Name numbers. Type
r = 4, then userlater, as inpi*r^2.ansis always the last answer. - Edit the tape. Change any earlier line and every line below it recalculates, like a small spreadsheet.
- Keyboard. Start typing anywhere on the page. Enter adds the line, Esc clears it and the up arrow brings back the last line.
Functions you can use
| Type | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
^ or ** | Power | 2^10 = 1,024 |
sqrt( ), cbrt( ), root(x, n) | Square, cube and nth roots | root(32, 5) = 2 |
sin cos tan | Trigonometry (Deg or Rad) | sin(30) = 0.5 in degrees |
asin acos atan | Inverse trig | atan(1) = 45° |
sinh cosh tanh | Hyperbolic functions | cosh(0) = 1 |
ln, log, log(x, b) | Natural log, base 10, any base | log(8, 2) = 3 |
! | Factorial | 6! = 720 |
% | Percent | 200 + 15% = 230 |
ncr(n, r), npr(n, r) | Combinations, permutations | ncr(5, 2) = 10 |
pi, e, phi | Constants | e^1 = 2.718281828… |
Order of operations
Calcist follows the standard order: brackets first, then powers, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction. So 2 + 3 × 4 is 14, not 20. A minus sign in front of a power applies after the power, so −2^2 is −4, while (−2)^2 is 4. Powers stack from the right: 2^3^2 is 2⁹ = 512.
Everything is calculated on your own device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and your tape is saved only in this browser.
