How long are dogs pregnant?
About 63 days, or roughly nine weeks. The Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC both give about 63 days from ovulation. Counted from the first breeding, the normal range is much wider, 58 to 72 days, because sperm can survive in the female for days and eggs mature after ovulation, so the breeding date and the true conception date can be days apart.
From ovulation: + 63 days (62–64) · From the LH surge or first progesterone rise: + 65 days (64–66)
If your vet timed ovulation with progesterone blood tests, the estimate is much tighter. Cornell's canine health center puts it at 63 days, give or take 1 to 2 days, from ovulation.
Worked example
Your dog was first bred on March 1, 2026. March 1 + 63 days = May 3, 2026. The normal range is March 1 + 58 days = April 28 to March 1 + 72 days = May 12.
Dog pregnancy week by week
| Days after breeding | What happens |
|---|---|
| About 21–28 | A vet may be able to feel the embryos by gently pressing on the belly (Merck: about day 21; AKC: days 20–28). |
| 25–35 | Ultrasound can reliably confirm the pregnancy and see heartbeats. |
| 27–35 | A relaxin blood test can detect pregnancy (AKC: 27–30 days after breeding; Merck: by 30–35 days). |
| Weeks 5–8 | Noticeably bigger appetite (AKC). |
| About 45 | Puppies' skeletons start to show on X-rays, and appetite often dips (AKC). |
| 55 and later | X-rays are the best way to count the puppies. |
| 58–62 | Nesting behavior usually starts (AKC). |
| 8–24 hours before birth | Rectal temperature drops, often below 99°F (Merck, Cornell). |
When to call your vet
The Merck Veterinary Manual says to call if early labor lasts more than 24 hours, active labor lasts more than 12 to 24 hours, or more than 1 to 4 hours pass between puppies. Cornell advises calling if more than two hours pass between puppies, and getting help right away if your dog seems to be in trouble or you're not sure labor is progressing normally. Call too for heavy bleeding, a foul-smelling discharge, or a mother who seems very distressed.
Limits of this estimate
- A breeding date only narrows the due date to a two-week window. Ovulation timing from your vet gives a far better date.
- Litter size and breed can shift the timing by a few days.
- This tool can't tell whether your dog is pregnant. Only a vet exam, ultrasound, blood test or X-ray can.
