GPA calculator

Pick a grade and enter the credit hours for each class. See your GPA on a 4.0 scale, weighted or unweighted, and your new cumulative GPA.

ClassGradeCreditsLevel

Leave the grade as — for rows you don't need. Most high school classes are 1 credit; most college classes are 3 or 4. Plus/minus counts an A− as 3.7; weighted adds 0.5 for Honors and 1 for AP/IB.

How GPA is calculated

Each letter grade is worth a number of grade points. Multiply each class's points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credits.

GPA = (points₁ × credits₁ + points₂ × credits₂ + …) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + …)
GradePointsGradePoints
A+ / A4.0C2.0
A−3.7C−1.7
B+3.3D+1.3
B3.0D1.0
B−2.7D−0.7
C+2.3F0.0

Worked example

English A (3 credits), Biology B+ (4), History A− (3) and Math C (3):

(4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4 + 3.7 × 3 + 2.0 × 3) ÷ 13 = (12 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 6) ÷ 13 = 42.3 ÷ 13 = 3.25

If English was Honors (+0.5) and Biology was AP (+1.0), the weighted GPA adds 3 × 0.5 + 4 × 1.0 = 5.5 points: 47.8 ÷ 13 = 3.68.

Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA weights each term by its credits, so you can't just average two GPAs.

Cumulative = (current GPA × credits earned + this term's points) ÷ (credits earned + this term's credits)

With a 3.40 over 30 credits and the term above: (3.4 × 30 + 42.3) ÷ 43 = 3.36.

Limitations

  • Schools differ. Some give A+ a 4.3, some don't use minus grades, and some high schools use a 5.0 or 100-point weighted scale. Check your school's handbook or registrar.
  • Weighting rules vary. Many schools add 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, but some cap the bonus, skip it for low grades, or don't weight at all. Here an F gets no bonus.
  • Pass/fail, withdrawals and repeats usually don't count, or replace the earlier grade. Leave them out.
  • Colleges often recalculate high school GPAs their own way for admissions.

How we checked this

Before every update, this calculator is run in a real browser with these known answers, and it must match all of them:

  • A (3), B+ (4), A− (3), C (3) on the +/− scale: 42.3 ÷ 13 = 3.254 ✓
  • Same classes, letter-only scale: 42 ÷ 13 = 3.231 ✓
  • Weighted, A Honors and B+ AP: 47.8 ÷ 13 = 3.677 ✓
  • 3.40 over 30 credits plus this term: cumulative 3.36 ✓
  • Edge: an F in an AP class gets no bonus (GPA 0.00) ✓
  • 3.85 average reads 'between an A− and an A' ✓
  • Edge: 0 credits says more than 0 ✓

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my GPA?

Turn each grade into points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), multiply by the class's credit hours, add those up, and divide by the total credit hours.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0 and treats every class the same. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, usually 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so it can go above 4.0.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Multiply your current GPA by the credits you've earned, add this term's grade points, then divide by your total credits. Averaging two GPAs only works if both terms had the same number of credits.

Is a 3.5 GPA good?

A 3.5 is between a B+ and an A− average on the 4.0 scale. What counts as good depends on the school or program you're aiming for.

Does a plus or minus change my GPA?

On most college scales, yes: an A− is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3. Some schools, especially high schools, count every A as 4.0. Switch the grade scale above to compare.
