Highest rates: Illinois (1.92%), New Jersey (1.89%), Connecticut (1.66%), New Hampshire (1.46%), New York (1.45%). Lowest rates: Hawaii (0.27%), Alabama (0.38%), Idaho (0.43%), Arizona (0.43%), Tennessee (0.45%).

A low rate doesn't always mean a low bill: Hawaii has the lowest rate but the highest home values, so its median tax is still $2,385. The example 6.5% rate is for illustration, not today's rate.

About the data

All figures are from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey 2024 1-year estimates for owner-occupied homes. Statewide rates hide big differences between counties and cities, so for a specific home, enter its actual tax bill in the mortgage calculator.
