How rebar is calculated

Bars run both ways in a grid. Keep them back from the edges (the "cover"), count how many fit at your spacing, and add a lap wherever one bar has to join another.

Bars one way = (width − 2 × cover) ÷ spacing, rounded down, + 1
Each bar's length = length − 2 × cover
Long runs: extra bars overlap by the lap length

Worked example

A 20 × 20 ft slab with 3 in cover leaves 19.5 ft each way. At 12 in spacing that's 19.5 × 12 ÷ 12 = 19.5, rounded down to 19, + 1 = 20 bars each way, each 19.5 ft. Each fits in one 20 ft bar, so buy 40 bars. That's 780 ft of #4 bar at 0.668 lb/ft, about 521 lb.

Rebar sizes

BarDiameterWeight per foot
#30.375 in0.376 lb
#40.500 in0.668 lb
#50.625 in1.043 lb
#60.750 in1.502 lb

The bar number is its diameter in eighths of an inch: #4 is 4/8 = ½ inch.

Limitations

  • Design comes first: bar size, spacing, cover and lap length should come from your plans or local code. This page only does the counting.
  • Cut-offs: leftover pieces from long runs are counted as waste; a careful cutting plan can save a little.
  • Chairs and ties: you'll also need supports to hold the bars in the middle of the slab, and tie wire for the intersections.

How we checked this

Before every update, this calculator is run in a real browser with these known answers, and it must match all of them:

  • 20 × 20 ft, 12 in spacing, 3 in cover: 40 bars of 20 ft ✓
  • Same: 780 ft of #4 weighs 521.04 lb ✓
  • 30 × 10 ft with 20 in laps: 35 bars, 398.573 lb ✓
  • Same: 35 bars of 20 ft ✓
  • Edge: cover too big for the slab ✓

Questions people ask

How much rebar do I need for a 20 × 20 slab?

At 12 in spacing each way with 3 in edge cover: 20 bars each way, 40 bars of 20 ft in total, about 780 ft or 521 lb of #4 bar.

What size rebar for a concrete slab?

Residential slabs often use #3 or #4 bar at 12 to 18 inches each way, but follow your plans or local code.

How much does rebar weigh per foot?

#3 weighs 0.376 lb/ft, #4 0.668 lb/ft, #5 1.043 lb/ft and #6 1.502 lb/ft.

How much should rebar overlap?

A lap of about 40 bar diameters is a common rule of thumb (20 in for #4), but codes and engineers set the actual length.
