How pay is converted

Everything goes through the annual figure first:

Annual = hourly × hours per week × weeks per year
Hourly = annual ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
Monthly = annual ÷ 12 · Semi-monthly = annual ÷ 24 · Biweekly = weekly × 2

A full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours. Semi-monthly (24 paychecks) and biweekly (26 paychecks) are different: a biweekly check is a little smaller, but you get two extra a year.

Worked example

$25 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks: 25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year, $4,333.33 a month, and $2,000 every two weeks. Going the other way, a $60,000 salary is 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

Holidays and vacation

  • Paid days off (typical for salaried jobs) don't change your pay, but you work fewer hours for it, so your real hourly rate goes up. 10 paid days on $52,000 means 2,000 hours worked, or $26 an hour.
  • Unpaid days off (common for hourly jobs) lower your yearly pay. At $20 an hour, 10 unpaid 8-hour days cost 10 × $160 = $1,600, so $41,600 becomes $40,000.

Limitations

  • Taxes and deductions are not included. These are gross (before-tax) figures. Your paycheck will be lower after federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and things like health insurance or retirement contributions.
  • Overtime isn't added. Under federal law most hourly employees earn 1.5× pay for hours over 40 in a week.
  • Weekly and biweekly amounts after unpaid days off are yearly averages. Real checks are smaller in weeks you take off.

Questions people ask

How much is $20 an hour per year?

$41,600 before taxes, at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks: 20 × 40 × 52.

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. For a full-time job that's 2,080 hours, so $50,000 is about $24.04 an hour.

What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?

Biweekly means every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, usually on the 1st and 15th, which is 24 paychecks.

How many work hours are in a year?

2,080 for a 40-hour week with no unpaid time off (40 × 52). Some employers use slightly different numbers, like 2,087, which averages in leap years.

Is this my take-home pay?

No. These numbers are before taxes and deductions, so your actual paychecks will be smaller. To see pay after federal tax, Social Security and Medicare, use the take-home pay calculator.
