New York minimum wage in 2026
The minimum wage in New York is $17.00 an hour in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, and $16.00 an hour in the rest of the state in 2026.
Scheduled increases
- January 1, 2027: no change: rates stay $17.00 and $16.00
Tipped minimum wage
Tipped food service workers: a cash wage of $11.35 in New York City, Long Island and Westchester and $10.70 in the rest of the state, with tip credits of $5.65 and $5.30.
Good to know
- New York's 2027 inflation increase didn't take effect because one of the law's "off-ramp" conditions was met. The governor has proposed letting it start March 1, 2027 ($17.60 and $16.55), but that needs the legislature's approval and isn't law.
How the pay is calculated
Monthly = weekly × 52 ÷ 12 · Yearly = weekly × 52
Federal law requires time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek for most hourly workers, so the calculator pays 1.5× for those hours. The after-tax figure subtracts 2026 federal income tax (with the standard deduction), Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), New York income tax and state payroll deductions for the whole year.
Worked example
A full-time job at $17.00 an hour, 40 hours a week: $17.00 × 40 = $680.00 a week. Times 52 weeks, that's $35,360 a year, or $2,946.67 a month.
For a single filer, taxes for the year come to $2,063.20 federal income tax, $2,705.04 Social Security and Medicare, New York income tax of $1,312 and $183.96 in state payroll deductions. That leaves about $29,095 a year, or $559.53 a week.

What this doesn't cover
- Some jobs have their own rules: tipped workers, minors, students, trainees, farm work and very small employers can have different minimums. The U.S. Department of Labor notes its state table doesn't show these.
- Daily overtime rules (for example California's after 8 hours a day) aren't included; only weekly overtime over 40 hours is.
- Tax is an estimate for a full year at the same hours. Refundable credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which many minimum wage workers qualify for, aren't included.
